Medical-grade sun protection for skin at high risk from the sun

Avène Sunsimed KA Very High Protection is a very high protection sun cream, classed as a medical device in Europe, for vulnerable skin that is prone to actinic keratosis or at high risk from sun exposure. It is also suited to people whose skin has become more sun-sensitive during oncology treatments, photodynamic therapy or fluorouracil-based treatments. Its TriProtect complex combines TriAsorB, Avène's own filter, with Tinosorb S, Uvinul A Plus and Uvinul T 150 to shield the skin from UVB, UVA and blue light up to 450nm, while pre-tocopheryl adds antioxidant protection. This high level of protection helps protect the skin against sun-induced DNA damage. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin for up to 8 hours, and Physol K, an emulsifier, helps the cream spread evenly so the protection is homogeneous. It stays on the skin for up to 24 hours of remanence.

The texture

A smooth, light cream in an 80ml pump bottle. It spreads evenly without leaving a thick white layer, and the skin feels hydrated rather than greasy. It has no fragrance and is easy to use every morning on the face, scalp, ears, neck and hands. It absorbs within a minute or two and makeup can be applied on top once it has set.

Worth knowing before you buy: this is a daily protective cream, not a treatment for existing lesions. Protection depends on applying enough and reapplying, and it works best together with shade, a hat and avoiding the midday sun. The formula contains a colourant (CI 17200).

How long one bottle lasts

Used every morning on the face, ears, neck and backs of the hands, with one reapplication on sunny days, the 80ml bottle lasts about five to six weeks. Bald scalps and larger areas need more, so plan on a bottle a month in summer.

How to use

Apply to exposed skin at least 20 minutes before going out, in a generous, even layer. Reapply frequently, every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or towelling off. Use every day, all year round, on the face, scalp, ears, neck and hands.
