Gilbert Emergency survival blanket 220x160 cm is the flat foil packet you hope never to open. It is a double-sided metallised blanket - gold on one face, silver on the other - large enough at 220 x 160 cm to wrap fully around an adult, and light and compact enough that it disappears into a first aid kit, a glovebox or the bottom of a rucksack. Which side you turn outwards decides what it does: hold body heat in, or push sunlight away. Gilbert is a French medical-supply laboratory, so this is the version that sits in pharmacy first-aid kits rather than a camping-shop novelty.

Two sides, two jobs

The gold side minimises body heat loss by creating an insulating barrier around the person wrapped in it - the use case after a fall, a long wait outdoors, or any situation where someone is getting cold. Turn it over and the silver side reflects sunlight to prevent overheating, which matters as much in a heatwave or a stopped car as the warming side does in winter. The material is thin but durable, and the 220 x 160 cm size is deliberate: it is wide enough to wrap around a body rather than just drape over one.
