The French pharmacy antiseptic for small, superficial skin wounds

Hexomédine Transcutanée 1.5 per mille is an antiseptic solution for local application, used on the skin for the antisepsis of small, superficial wounds and as a local complementary care when the skin may become superinfected. Its active substance, hexamidine diisetionate (0.15%), belongs to the diamidine family and temporarily reduces the number of microorganisms on the skin. Registered as a medicine in France since 1955, it comes in a 45ml glass bottle with a wide neck that also allows short local baths, for example of a fingertip or nail area, as described on its leaflet.

How it works

A clear, alcohol-based liquid that you dab on neat with a sterile compress or use as a short local bath. It does not need rinsing and dries quickly on the skin. Like all antiseptics, it does not sterilise the skin but lowers the number of germs for a while.

Worth knowing before you buy: Hexomédine contains ethyl alcohol and propylene glycol, and it is a medicine. Once opened, the bottle keeps for 15 days, or 5 days if used for local baths.

How to use

Use neat, twice a day, dabbed on with a sterile compress or as a local bath. For nail areas, the leaflet describes either a short wet dressing of 30 to 45 minutes or a bath of 1 to 3 minutes; in that case, do not keep the solution or the bottle for another use. No rinsing needed. Close the bottle well after use and read the leaflet in the box before use.
