Herôme Nail Hardener Extra Strong is a clear hardening varnish for extremely soft, thin and brittle nails. It is the step up from Herôme's Strong hardener, made for nails whose condition has not improved enough after a course with the blue-box version. It hardens the keratin of the nail plate so nails become firmer and less likely to split, peel or break, and it lets them grow longer without snapping. Herôme reports visible results after 14 days. After the course, it can be used once or twice a week as a base coat or clear top coat to keep nails protected.

How it works

The active ingredient is formaldehyde, which binds the keratin fibres of the nail together and makes the free edge firmer. The formula also contains N-acetyl-L-cysteine and acetyl methionine, building blocks of keratin. It dries to a clear, glossy finish.

Worth knowing before you buy: this is the strongest Herôme hardener and it contains formaldehyde. Apply it only to the nail, keeping it off the cuticles and surrounding skin, and do not use it on damaged or very dry nails. Stick to the two-week course, then use it at most once or twice a week, as overuse can make nails rigid and brittle.

How to use

During a 14-day course, apply one thin coat to clean, dry nails, keeping it off the cuticles and skin. After the course, apply once or twice a week at most, alone or as a base or top coat with your usual polish. Remove with nail polish remover.
