A 10 ml single essential oil of Pelargonium x asperum, distilled from the leaves, for dermal use and diffusion

Pranarôm Essential oils Egyptian Geranium Essential Oil is 100% essential oil of Egyptian geranium, with nothing else in the bottle. Its main aromatic molecules are citronellol and geraniol, and it is distilled from the leaves of the plant. Of the roughly 500 geranium species, only a handful are used in aromatherapy at all, and this one is cultivated in Madagascar, Réunion Island, Guinea and Algeria. The scent is mild and sweet, which is why geranium turns up so often in perfumery and cosmetics as well as in aromatherapy. Pranarôm is a Belgian house that states species, distilled part and chemotype on the label - the level of detail serious users look for.

One species, named precisely

The bottle contains the essential oil of Pelargonium x asperum, Egyptian geranium, with citronellol and geraniol as its characteristic aromatic molecules and the leaves as the distilled part. That precision matters with geranium: out of around 500 species in the genus, only a few are of any use in aromatherapy, so a bottle labelled simply "geranium" tells you much less than this one does. Cultivation spans Madagascar, Réunion Island, Guinea and Algeria.

How Pranarôm positions its use

Pranarôm rates this oil ++++ for dermal use and ++++ for air diffusion, ++ for oral use, and marks inhalation by aerosol as not advised, on a scale where +++++ means strongly advised. The brand's own leaflet also gives a blending example: 25 drops of rosemary verbenone, 50 drops of cistus ladaniferus and 50 drops of Egyptian geranium in 5 ml of St John's wort oil, to be applied to a crack or crevice in the skin. The sweet, mild fragrance is also what makes geranium a favourite in perfumery and cosmetology.

Who it suits

  • Adults already familiar with handling undiluted essential oils
  • Anyone building a small aromatherapy kit around named, single-species oils
  • Diffusion at home, or dermal use once properly diluted in a carrier oil
  • A 10 ml bottle: travel-friendly, and enough for occasional use rather than daily diffusion

Worth knowing before you buy: this is an undiluted essential oil, not a ready-to-use product. It is naturally rich in citronellol and geraniol, both recognised fragrance allergens, so dilute it in a vegetable oil before any skin contact and patch test first. Pranarôm asks for caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in children under 3, says not to exceed the recommended dose, and notes it is no substitute for a varied, balanced diet - and the brand itself rates aerosol inhalation as not advised for this oil.
