A 30-second olaflur rinse for teeth that twinge on cold drinks

Elmex Sensitive Mouthwash Sensitive 100ml (3.38fl oz) is the rinse that comes after the brush, not instead of it. In 30 seconds it reaches 100% of the mouth - including the gaps a brush head never quite gets to - and leaves behind a layer of olaflur amine fluoride. Elmex's claim for it is protection of the teeth and help against tooth decay, plus a protective layer aimed at the painful twinges that come with hypersensitivity. The 100ml bottle is small enough for hand luggage, which is unusual in a category sold almost entirely in 400ml and 500ml bottles.

Olaflur and a protective layer

The active here is olaflur, the amine fluoride Elmex is built on, and you can read it fourth on the ingredient list. What it does, in the brand's words, is create a protective layer on the tooth - the mechanism behind both claims the pack makes: helping prevent tooth decay, and heading off the painful sensations that come with sensitive teeth. Potassium fluoride appears further down the list as the second fluoride source.

The step after brushing

This is a complement to ordinary brushing, and Elmex is explicit about that - it does not replace two minutes with a toothbrush. Where it earns its place is coverage: a brush reaches the surfaces it can touch, a rinse gets everywhere in 30 seconds flat. One dose is 10ml, once a day, or twice a day when teeth are feeling sensitive. You do not rinse with water afterwards, which is what lets the fluoride stay put.

Worth knowing before you buy: at 10ml a dose, a 100ml bottle gives you about ten rinses - a week and a half at once a day, less if your teeth are sensitive and you use it twice. It is a travel size, and the running cost per rinse is far higher than the big bottles. It is also not for under-6s, must not be swallowed, and is sweetened with saccharin and flavoured with aroma.

How to use
