Six plant-wax candles with geraniol, to keep the terrace usable without putting repellent on your skin

Manouka Monoï anti-mosquito candle x 6 brings a pack of six vegetable wax candles whose active is geraniol, a natural compound that repels insects. Each candle is stated to give 6 hours of continuous protection over a 10 m³ area, and the pack is quoted as 30 hours of use in total. The fragrance is the reason to choose this one over plain citronella: a warm vanilla-monoï scent, so the candle reads as part of the evening rather than as pest control. Manouka states efficacy has been independently tested against mosquitoes - tiger mosquitoes included - flies and wasps.

Geraniol, in plant wax

The candles are made with plant-based wax and geraniol, a proven natural repellent, and they act as soon as they are lit. Manouka reports that efficacy has been independently tested and verified against mosquitoes, including tiger mosquitoes, as well as flies and wasps, which is a wider range than most repellent candles claim. The stated coverage is enough for generous outdoor areas, so one or two candles can hold a table: al fresco dinners, evening gatherings on a patio, or a campsite pitch.

A scent that earns its place on the table

Beyond the repellent effect, each candle releases a delicate vanilla-monoï fragrance - exotic but subtle enough not to fight with food. That is what separates it from the sharp citronella bucket most people end up resenting. Because they come six to a pack, you can set several around the edge of a terrace to cover the space instead of relying on one, and keep spares for the rest of the season. They work on a patio, by a pool or in a conservatory.

Who it suits

  • Terraces, balconies, patios and poolsides on summer evenings
  • Anyone who would rather not put repellent on their skin for a meal outdoors
  • Outdoor dinners and gatherings, where several candles can ring the table
  • Camping and sheltered outdoor spaces such as a conservatory or covered patio

Worth knowing before you buy: the manufacturer's own burn figures do not line up - the claims list says 6 hours per candle and 30 hours for the pack, while the directions say to burn each one for a maximum of 2 to 3 hours per session, so expect to light each candle several times rather than get one long evening from it. Coverage is also quoted two ways (a 10 m³ volume and a 10-metre radius), and in open air or any breeze a repellent candle protects much less than either figure suggests - it is not a substitute for a skin repellent in a bad mosquito spot. These are open flames: never leave one unattended, keep them away from children, pets and anything flammable, and leave at least 10 cm between candles. Geraniol may cause a skin allergy, so do not use them if you are allergic to it.
